Thinking About This Photograph

This photograph was taken in Monzennakacho, Koto-ku, Tokyo.

This is a photograph of the alley leading from “Eitai-Street” passing through Monzennakacho to the old red-light district.

You can see that the road is narrowing from the middle.

There are many alleys in Japan where the width of the road changes in this way.

The reason for this is that, for example, for alleys that were 2m wide until now, there is an ordinance that when rebuilding a building that is in contact with the road, 2m from the center of the road must be provided as a road.

In other words, when the building on the other side is rebuilt, the road will be 4m wide.

This is called “Setback” in real estate terminology.

Looking at the photograph, you can see that the building in the foreground is relatively new and therefore “setbacked”, and the building in the back is old and therefore “not setbacked”.

I took a picture of such an alley.

It is a scenery unique to downtown Tokyo.
