Thinking About This Photograph
This photograph was taken in Nihonbashi-Ningyocho, Chuo-ku, Tokyo.
It was taken in the area where “Yoshiwara Yukaku” used to be.
“Yoshiwara Yukaku” was the largest red-light district in Japan at that time, and was there before the big fire of 1657.
You can find many old buildings in this area.
Nihonbashi-Ningyocho is an area that escaped the war of World War II, so you can find buildings that remain from before the war.
I have no idea what kind of store this building is, but it is a fairly old building.
You can see the air conditioner outdoor unit, bicycles, motorcycles, bulletin boards, etc., but there are also potted plants in them.
As a feature of the appearance around the entrance of a Japanese private house, this “potted plant” is a major feature that is indispensable.
However, it is not beautiful at all …
It seems that it is properly watered every day, but it is also characteristic that the plant itself is not beautiful at all.
So why do Japanese people always put such potted plants around the front door?
It’s a mystery …
