Thinking About This Photograph

This photograph was taken in Ginza, Chuo-ku, Tokyo.

I photographed the back entrance of a building with restaurants in the area called Higashi-Ginza on the east side of “Chuo-dori” (Ginza Street).

This photograph was taken in June 2020, so it’s still before the “The Other Side of Tokyo Japan” project started in earnest, and this is one of the photos that inspired me to start this project.

At that time, I was shooting a show window in Ginza, but I remember seeing this back door and wanting to take a picture.

Ginza is an area lined with brand shops, and there is no other city in Tokyo where you can see so many brand shop show windows.

For that reason, I was shooting a show window in Ginza, but when I happened to pass the back alley, I came across this landscape.

It was a dingy, ugly landscape, but I felt something shining.

Since then, I realized that “ugly things are good for photography” and decided to start this project.

What I have always aimed for as a photographer is “a photograph in which a moving object appears to stop and a stationary object appears to move”.

In this project, I would like to take pictures with the aim of “photographing ugly things beautifully and beautiful things ugly”.
