Thinking About This Photograph<\/h3>\n

\u00a0This photograph was taken in Monzennakacho, Koto-ku, Tokyo.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This is a photograph of the alley leading from “Eitai-Street” passing through Monzennakacho to the old red-light district.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0You can see that the road is narrowing from the middle.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0There are many alleys in Japan where the width of the road changes in this way.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The reason for this is that, for example, for alleys that were 2m wide until now, there is an ordinance that when rebuilding a building that is in contact with the road, 2m from the center of the road must be provided as a road.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0In other words, when the building on the other side is rebuilt, the road will be 4m wide.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This is called “Setback” in real estate terminology.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Looking at the photograph, you can see that the building in the foreground is relatively new and therefore “setbacked”, and the building in the back is old and therefore “not setbacked”.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0I took a picture of such an alley.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0It is a scenery unique to downtown Tokyo.<\/span><\/p>\n
